چکیده

Radioactive xenon-133 was used to study the pattern of regional lung function in 35 scoliotic patients and 10 normal subjects in the sitting posture. The scoliotic curves were classified into three anatomical sites: high, if the apical vertebra was located between Thl and Th5; mid, between Th6 and ThlO; and low, between Thll and L4; only the primary curve was considered and in 70% of the patients this measured more than 600. The mean pattern of perfusion in patients with low and mid curves was not significantly different from that of the normals, nor was there any significant difference between the convex and concave lungs in these two groups. Patients with high curves showed three distinct patterns: (a) Subgroup 1 (2 patients): Perfusion was greatest at the apex and least at the base in the

Pulmonary function in children with idiopathic scoliosis

Idiopathic scoliosis, a common disorder of lateral displacement and rotation of vertebral bodies during periods of rapid somatic growth, has many effects on respiratory function. Scoliosis results in a restrictive lung disease with a multifactorial decrease in lung volumes, displaces the intrathoracic organs, impedes on the movement of ribs and affects the mechanics of the respiratory muscles. ...

Regional pulmonary ventilation and perfusion distribution in patients with untreated idiopathic scoliosis.

Regional lung function using xenon-133 was studied in 45 seated patients aged 11 to 78 years with untreated idiopathic scoliosis and angulation of curvature between 10 and 1900. Perfusion distribution was assessed by intravenous bolus injection of '33Xe and distribution of ventilation to volume ratios by washouts after inhalation and intravenous injection. No consistent differences between the ...

Lung function asymmetry in children with congenital and infantile scoliosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT Progressive scoliosis alters lung function by reducing chest wall compliance and excursion and rotating intrathoracic contents, producing an increasingly asymmetric lung size. The effect of this distortion on regional lung perfusion and ventilation has not been described in children with congenital and infantile forms of scoliosis. The severity of scoliosis is often described...

Evaluation of lung function, chest mobility, and physical fitness during rehabilitation of scoliotic girls.

BACKGROUND Scoliosis is a common medical condition in children and adolescents, particularly girls. It is accompanied by disorders of multiple systems and organs, especially the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, which significantly affects general physical capacity. AIM OF THE STUDY This study sought to assess lung function, chest mobility, and physical fitness in scoliotic girls underg...

Pulmonary restrictive effect of bracing in mild idiopathic scoliosis.

The use of bracing in the treatment of mild idiopathic scoliosis is controversial. A study of 33 adolescents showed that bracing significantly decreased lung volumes. Functional residual capacity was reduced by a mean of 26%, 18% of children showing a reduction of greater than 40%. The mean reduction in total lung capacity was 16% and in forced vital capacity 18%. This restriction of lung funct...
